What is this?

Epididymitis is the inflammation of the epididymis.

Orchitis is the inflammation of the testicle.

Their etiology is often infectious.

Germs involved:

In the young, the germs mainly involved are Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis.

In the elderly, it is more about enterobacteriaceae.

Mechanism of contamination:

This is essentially a retrograde contamination.

In young people, the spread of a sexually transmitted infection is along urethra and then the vas deferens to reach the epididymis and testis.

In the older subject, it is reflux of contaminated urine through the veru montanum.

Symptoms:

Typically the patient presents with fever with pain and scrotal swelling. Pain onset is gradual and rapid, but not abrupt. A digital rectal examination allows check for acute prostatitis.

Biology:

Bacteriological samples must be taken before any research treatment urinary tract infection or urethritis.

Processing:

The treatment is first probabilistic then adapt according to the result of bacteriological samples.
